Karsten Attends 35th Anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution in Leipzig
To mark the 35th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution, our CEO Karsten was a guest at yesterday's ceremony in the Gewandhaus zu Leipzig.
Among the political celebrities were: Joachim Gauck - former Federal President, Michael Kretschmer - Prime Minister of the Freistaat Sachsen, Burkhard Jung - Mayor of Leipzig, Marianne Birthler - civil rights activist, Vitali Klitschko - former boxing champion and current Mayor of Kiev and many others.
Karsten describes yesterday's entire ceremony as impressive and moving, especially the speech by civil rights activist Marianne Birthler. Anyone who experienced the year 1989 knows what feelings and humility these retrospectives trigger.
Olaf Scholz gave the “Speech on Democracy” and Michel Kretschmer gave very personal insights into his memories of the fall of 1989, when he was 14 years old.
Burkhard Jung expressly thanked all those people who, in 1989, with a very warm heart and incredible courage, ensured that we can live in freedom and democracy today. He reminded us to defend freedom and self-determination, to fight for human dignity and democracy as inviolable goods.
Every year on October 9, the city of Leipzig commemorates the events of the Peaceful Revolution in the fall of 1989 with the Peace Prayer and the “Speech on Democracy”.
On October 9, 1989, more than 70,000 people gathered after prayers for peace in several churches in Leipzig city center to demonstrate non-violently - the breakthrough for the Peaceful Revolution and a key event in German and European history.
October 9, 1989 is regarded as the precondition for the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9 and German reunification.
